Simon Baumann's artistic encounter with our hectic Zeitgeist

OSOMO’s music creates spaces for pause, retreat and contemplation away from the outside world and its frantic pace. Music that is geared towards the inner world. It is an invitation to let go – and to travel – in our frenetic times. It is music that carries you away, a soundscape in which listeners can let themselves go with their own thoughts, feelings and physical sensations, move around, and rest. A journey that takes everyone to a different place.

OSOMOS’s live-sets (known as Horizontal Concerts) build a musical and physical space in which to lie down, dream and sleep; from letting go to the most focused, deepest listening. OSOMO makes music that envelops you and carries you away. To be touched by music, whether in the body or in the mind, is a mysterious and stimulating – and above all unfathomable – experience. «I’ve always been looking for that moment when music can change our state of mind», says Simon Baumann.

OSOMO is his solo project. Baumann is Stephan Eicher’s drummer, and has collaborated with Colin Vallon, Mario Batkovic, Don Li, and others. He is now releasing his first album, Side Trips, on Two Gentlemen.

In Side Trips, Baumann’s aesthetic programme is expressed in a continuous musical arc, articulated in thirteen movements. Osomo takes the frenetic spirit of our time and translates it into acoustic pulses – «My instrument is rhythm», he adds. From one sequence to the next, waves of sound rearrange themselves. Textures are generally electronic, with occasional emergers of trombone, vibraphone, old drums, and vocal samples.

These waves follow several dynamics: they progress, they flow and ebb, they interpenetrate. When they break, they take on more or less rapid, but always powerful impulses. Melodic sequences alternate with phases of rest. We navigate from perfectly contemplative moments to propulsive phases. Rhythms and syncopations interact with each other in refined balance. All this turns, meanders, orbits around the mind and the senses. And indeed, even if it ventures into stratospheric heights, it is by its undulatory identity that Baumann’s music distinguishes itself from the stasis of ambient: Side Trips is a work in perpetual motion.

Musician Simon Baumann (*1976, CH) is a drummer, music producer, performer, and creative mind. He has toured for more than ten years with Stephan Eicher and worked with many other artists in France, Germany, and Switzerland: Mario Batkovic, Sirens of Lesbos, Ian Fisher, Don Li.
He has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Olympia concert hall in Paris, and hundreds of other venues in Europe, sharing the stage with Sophie Hunger, Evelinn Trouble, Louis Bertignac, Arthur Teboul (Feu! Chatterton), Bonaparte, Jeans 4 Jesus, Fritz Kalkbrenner and others.
Baumann was a member of the Berlin electro trio One:Shot:Orchestra and the Swiss electronic duo Mercury. As a producer of electronic music, he has worked for Gomma Records/Toy Tonics, among others.
In the US, he remixed Marvin Gaye’s Sunny for both the television series Ray Donovan (CBS Hollywood) and Universal Music Los Angeles.
In 2016, Baumann founded Die Polstergruppe, an experimental music collective, together with Eicher and Lericolais, with whom he gave his first Horizontal Concert at the Bee Flat club (Bern). He has worked with John Armleder, Marco Repetto, Colin Vallon, and Dan Reeder.
Baumann currently lives in Switzerland.

Die Musik von OSOMO kreiert Räume der Pause, des Rückzugs und der Kontemplation. Weg von der schnellgetakteten Aussenwelt hin zur Innenwelt. Unserem hektischen Zeitgeist entgegnet OSOMO die Einladung zu einer Reise. Konzipiert als «transportierende Musik», bildet sie eine klangliche Umgebung, in der sich die Zuhörer*innen in ihre eigenen Gedanken, Gefühle und körperliche Empfindungen hineinbegeben, sich darin bewegen und aufhalten können. Es ist eine Reise, die für jede Person an andere Orte führt.

Die OSOMO Live-Sets, die Horizontal Concerts bieten einen musikalischen und physischen Raum zum Sein, zum Liegen, zum Träumen, zum Schlafen – vom Loslassen bis zum konzentriertesten, tiefsten Zuhören. OSOMO ist eine Musik, die einen einhüllt, gleichzeitig mitreisst und eine Erfahrung bietet, die sowohl geheimnisvoll als auch herausfordernd ist: «Was mit uns geschieht, wenn wir von Musik berührt werden - sei es in unserem Körper oder unserem Geist - bleibt unergründlich. Ich bin schon immer auf der Suche nach diesem Moment, in dem Musik das eigene Befinden verändern kann».

OSOMO ist das Soloprojekt des Musikers Simon Baumann (Schlagzeuger bei Stephan Eicher, Zusammenarbeiten mit Colin Vallon, Mario Batkovic, Don Li u.a.). Bei Two Gentlemen veröffentlicht er nun sein Debutalbum Side Trips.

In Side Trips äussert sich das ästhetische Programm Baumanns in einem durchgehenden musikalischen Bogen, der sich in dreizehn Sätze gliedert. Unseren hektischen Zeitgeist greift Baumann in Form von akustischen Pulsen auf – «Mein Instrument ist der Rhythmus», sagt er. Von einer Sequenz zur nächsten werden Wellen von Klängen arrangiert. Die Texturen sind meist elektronisch, mit Einlagen von Posaune, Vibraphon, alten Trommeln, und Samples von Sprache. Die Wellen artikulieren sich in verschiedenen Dynamiken: sie schreiten voran, sie fliessen vor und zurück, sie durchdringen sich. Wenn sie brechen, sie sind langsam oder schnell, aber immer kraftvoll. Sequenzen von Melodie wechseln sich ab mit ruhenden Sphären. Man navigiert von vollkommen kontemplativen Momenten zu treibenden Phasen. Rhythmen und Synkopen verhalten sich zueinander in einer raffinierten Balance. All dies dreht sich, schlängelt sich, kreist um das Gehirn und die Sinne. Auch wenn sie sich in stratosphärische Bereiche begibt, ist es in der Tat die wellenförmige Identität, die Simon Baumanns Musik von der Stagnation des Ambient unterscheidet: Side Trips ist ein Werk in ständiger Bewegung.

Baumann tourte mehr als zehn Jahre mit dem Schweizer Künstler Stephan Eicher und arbeitete mit vielen anderen wie Mario Batkovic, Sirens of Lesbos, Ian Fisher, Don Li in Frankreich, Deutschland, Belgien und der Schweiz.
Live-Auftritte beim Montreux Jazz Festival, der L'Olympia Concert Hall in Paris und mehreren hundert weiteren Veranstaltungsorten in ganz Europa.
Er teilte die Bühne mit Sophie Hunger, Evelinn Trouble, Louis Bertignac, Arthur Teboul von Feu! Chatterton, Bonaparte, Jeans 4 Jesus, Fritz Kalkbrenner und anderen.
Simon Baumann war Teil des Berliner Inide-Electro-Trios One:Shot:Orchestra sowie des Schweizer Elektronik-Duos Mercury. Als Produzent elektronischer Musik arbeitete er u.a. für das Label Gomma Records, heute bekannt als Toy Tonics.
In den USA arbeitete er zudem als Remixer für Marvin Gayes Song Sunny sowohl für die TV-Serie Ray Donovan (CBS Hollywood) als auch für Universal Music Los Angeles.
2016 gründete Simon Baumann zusammen mit Stephan Eicher und Rainier Lericolais Die Polstergruppe, ein experimentelles Musikkollektiv. In diesem Kollektiv kreierte Baumann während einer Carte Blanche des Berner Clubs Bee Flat ein erstes Horizontal Concert und arbeitete mit John Armleder, Marco Repetto, Colin Vallon, Dan Reeder, Fabian Kalker und anderen zusammen.

La musique d'OSOMO crée des espaces de pause, de retrait et de contemplation. Loin du monde extérieur et de son rythme effréné, vers le monde intérieur. A notre époque frénétique, elle oppose une invitation à l'oubli – et au voyage. C’est une «musique qui transporte», un environnement sonore dans lequel les auditeurs/trices se laissent aller à leurs propres pensées, sentiments, sensations physiques – s'y déplacent et s’y reposent. Un voyage qui mène chacun vers un endroit différent.

Les live-sets d’OSOMO (connus sous le nom de Horizontal Concerts) construisent un espace musical et physique dans lequel s'allonger, rêver, dormir. Du lâcher prise à la l'écoute la plus concentrée, la plus profonde. OSOMO, c’est une musique qui vous enveloppe et qui en même temps vous emporte. Être touché par la musique, que ce soit dans notre corps ou dans notre esprit, constitue une expérience à la fois mystérieuse et stimulante – et surtout insondable. «Je suis depuis toujours à la recherche de ce moment où la musique peut modifier notre état d'esprit», dit Simon Baumann.

Osomo est son projet solo. Simon Baumann est le batteur de Stephan Eicher, et il a collaboré avec Colin Vallon, Mario Batkovic, Don Li et d’autres. Chez Two Gentlemen, il publie maintenant son premier album: Side Trips.

Dans Side Trips, le programme esthétique de Baumann s'exprime selon un arc musical continu, articulé en treize mouvements. OSOMO s'empare de l’esprit frénétique de notre époque et le traduit en pulsations acoustiques – «Mon instrument, c'est le rythme», dit-il encore. D'une séquence à l'autre, des vagues de sons se réarrangent. Les textures sont généralement électroniques, avec quelques irruptions de trombone, de vibraphone, de vieux tambours, et de samples vocaux. Ces vagues s'articulent selon plusieurs dynamiques: elles progressent, elles fluent et refluent, elles s'interpénètrent. Quand elles se brisent, elles prennent des élans plus ou moins rapides, mais toujours puissants. Des séquences mélodiques alternent avec des phases de repos. On navigue de moments parfaitement contemplatifs à des phases propulsives. Les rythmes et les syncopes dialoguent les uns avec les autres dans un équilibre raffiné. Tout cela tourne, serpente, orbite autour de l’esprit et des sens. Et en effet : même si elle s'aventure dans des altitudes stratosphériques, c'est bien par son identité ondulatoire que la musique de Simon Baumann se distingue du statisme de l'ambient: Side Trips est une œuvre en mouvement perpétuel.
